What is the best decking option for exposed site over grass?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Pannies. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about constructing a deck.
For an exposed site over grass, you’ll first want to create a solid and well-drained base for your deck. Typically, you’d start by excavating the top layer of grass and soil, then laying down a bed of gravel to improve drainage and stability. From there, you could either use adjustable pedestal feet to support the frame or install H4-treated pine posts set in concrete. The frame itself should be built from H3-treated pine for durability and resistance to the elements.
When it comes to decking boards, you have a few good options for exposed conditions. Treated pine decking is a cost-effective and versatile choice, while Merbau offers excellent weather resistance and a rich, attractive finish. Alternatively, composite options like Ekodeck are ideal for low-maintenance, long-term durability in exposed areas.
Here’s a helpful guide on How to build a deck that includes an example of one built over a grassed area. If you have any specific questions about your site or materials, feel free to share more details; we’d be happy to help you plan your project.
