Can you use VJ Panels for a hallway?

Any suggestions on using Hardie VJ panels in one side wall in Hallways, Living and Stairs wall instead of 13mm Gyprock.

Any downsides to using these? Also, how do you repair them (in case there is damage to it)?

Re: Can you use VJ Panels for a hallway?

Hi @Samara1,

What product were you specifically looking to use? Was it the James Hardie 2700 x 1200 x 7.5mm 3.24m² Hardie Groove Lining

Repairing damage to plasterboard is often easier compared to cement sheets. Plasterboard can be patched, sanded, and repainted relatively easily as a D.I.Y. project. However, repairing damage to cement sheets may require more effort and may not blend in as seamlessly. If damage happens on one of the VJ joints, it would be hard to reform convincingly.

Other considerations would be:

  •  Plasterboard typically offers better sound and thermal insulation compared to thinner cement wall sheets. The thicker the material, the better it tends to be at dampening sound transmission and preventing heat transfer

  • Cement sheets tend to be more durable and resistant to moisture compared to plasterboard. They are less prone to damage from impacts, moisture, and pests. This can be an advantage in areas prone to moisture or high traffic

  • Depending on the specifics of your project, the installation of cement sheets may require different techniques or additional support structures compared to plasterboard. This can affect both the cost and complexity of the project.

For fitout it would be worth considering whether it would be a more effective approach to install MDF VJ panels over plasterboard instead of using the cement sheet.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
