Wanted to give the house a fresh look without spending a fortune. Decided using mortar to give the house a bagged look and paint was the easiest and most cost effective way to go! I also used a metal paint to spray the windows black to cover the old bronze look. I used 7x bags of mortar to transform these tired bricks and finished off with exterior dulux paint in the colour “feather soft”. For the windows I used dulux metal shield epoxy enamel in black satin.
For bagging house
drop sheets
Painters tape
Mixer drill attachment
bucket
sponges
trowel
stiff broom
paint - dulux weathershield
paint roller
paint brushes
FOR WINDOWS

For bagging the house-
Pressure clean bricks ensuring to remove any dirt, cobwebs and grime. Leave bricks to dry out but need to be a little wet to work with.
In a large bucket mix up mortar mix with water with an electric mixer attachment for the drill. Mix until you get a toothpaste consistency. If too wet add more mortar mix.
Working from the bottom up, using a trowel on a 45 degree angle push mortar into bricks as you sweep it up in a motion similar to a windscreen wiper.
Once you have an even coat in the bricks, leave to set slightly. Depending on temperature this can be anywhere from 10mins to 40mins. Then with several large sponges and a bucket of clean water, use a damp sponge to wipe back the mortar and smooth it out to your desired finish.
Wait a couple days and then with a stiff broom brush off any excess dust/mortar that might be present. Leave at least 30 days to set before painting.
For spraying windows-
Give the window frames a thorough clean with a scouter and grime remover.
Once dry, tape up windows to ensure glass is protected as well as exterior of house.
Shake your paint really well and ensure you mask up. Spray a steady and even coat on all frames.
Allow to dry for recommended time and then recoat. Remove tape and you are done!
Hello @DIY-WIFEY
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's wonderful to have you join us.
Thank you very much for sharing the steps and materials of your mortar and paint project. The finish on the brick surface looks sensational and gives it such a modern look and feel. The paint you've chosen is very nice and it still has enough brightness to call attention without going overboard.
Eric
Good Afternoon @DIY-WIFEY
That certainly has come up nice! You have given your place a new lease of life
I havnt done any mortaring but have considered it. and Definently you have made it look easy.
I do have a question about your windows tho
You spray painted them black (nice choice) How has the paint held up since? As in bonding to the metal frame? And did you do any prep work on the metal before spraying?
Coming home on a sunny day compared to coming home on a rainy day is what your house reminds me of now ![]()

Hey Dave,
Thanks for the positivity, and couldn’t agree more, so much brighter and lighter! The windows have been sprayed for a few years now, holding up really well! I think the key is in the prep work. I cleaned them really well, scrubbed with a green kitchen scourer, clean off with methylated spirits, then a couple thin coats with ample dry time. Have given a really good finish and durability! It’s a great way to freshen them up without being super costly!
good luck, I’m sure you will do great!
Thanks for the encouragement Eric!
