Looking for advice on how to repair front door latch which has stopped working and is just hanging loose.
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @hollyallen2023. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about repairing door locks.
It appears that the latch has either disconnected from an internal component or the mechanism inside has broken. The only way to be certain is to remove the whole lock and handle assembly and inspect it. Often, with issues like this, it’s not really something that can be repaired easily at home.
If the lock is a branded product like Lane, it usually comes with a warranty. If you purchased it through a store and have your proof of purchase, the quickest solution is to take the lock back to the store and discuss a warranty replacement. If you open it up and something has just come loose, you might be able to realign it, but most of the time a broken internal mechanism means the lock will need replacing. Trying to fix it yourself can be tricky and may cause more damage, so a replacement under warranty or buying a new lock is usually the safest and most reliable solution.
