How do I seal a gap between doorway and floor?

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping for some advice on how to seal a gap between my floorboards and the bottom of a door frame (on the ground). There’s shoe moulding/skirting on either side of the wall, but the gap appears just at the doorway itself where the shoe moulding is too large to fit there

What’s the best way to fill or seal this gap so it looks neat and prevents dirt from getting in? Looking for suggestions on the best option to do this.

Thanks in advance!

Hello @MarlieBeena

I propose using standard timber pine moulding to fill the gap. the general steps will be to cut a small section of timber pine moulding and see it fits into the gap. trace the shape of the door frame and cut it out using a coping saw or similar tool. Sand the timber filler very well so that it lines up with the door frame. Once you are confident that it is the right size apply some construction adhesive inside the gap and push the filler in. Your last step will be to paint the timber filler in the same colour as your door frame.

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their recommendations.

Good Evening @MarlieBeena

My suggestion is pretty much the same as @EricL 's  Tho maybe you could chop off a piece of the edging trim you are using to make it shorter so it fits underneath that gap. It will help the eyes glaze past and not see it. A small rectangular piece of timber trim would do the job as well and probarly be a lot easier to do.

Re: How do I seal a gap between doorway and floor?

Hi @MarlieBeena

What @EricL has suggested is an excellent solution. As an alternative I would probably go with using builders bog and carving it into shape as it dries. Its something I do in similar situations without having to muck around with fiddly bits of wood and then having to fill the gaps anyway..

To do this, run painters tape along the top edge of the door jamb and the along the floor. Fill the space with bog and then keep checking for hardness as it dries. This won't take long. As it starts to get fairly solid, use a thin bladed hobby knife to start making vertical shaving cuts inline with the jambs profile. Once dried use a small piece of folded sandpaper to smooth it over and prime undercoat. Once the areas is final painted it will be un-noticeable by anyone other than maybe your self for a bit.
