How to fix leather-style chair that's peeling?

Hi

I have all these dining chairs that their top leather skin have come off.

Not sure what to do, whether to paint the chairs or find leather cover for them.

This is a pretty common thing with faux leather. Check out How do I paint a leather couch for some guidance on this topic.

Personally, I think painting it wouldn't be a great option purely because of how much paint you would need to apply. I can't see it looking great with that much paint applied.

I think having the chairs reupholstered or having covers made for them would be a better way to go.

I would go the route of recovering/covering the seat section over painting it. If the colour is lifting due to wear I think it will probarlly keep on lifting. I have recovered my dining room seats and have another 4 to do (should be doing it as I type lol) 

If you look on the underside you may be able to see how the faux leather is attached to the seat. I generally work backwards to see how the upholstery was attached and the timber backplane is attached to the metal frame of the chair.

Dining table build and seats reupholstering is the project, and step 3 is where I start on reupholstering the seats themselves.

I know Spotlight carries a multitude of seat coverings

Hi @AJ-DIYer,

The main stumbling block to DIY chair reupholstering is when they have a upholstered back.

@Dave-1 was able to because the chairs just have a bum seat.

I was able to reupholster both the bum and the back my office chair because...

  

... because the back has a full plastic cover.

In your case if you have sewing skills (or know someone) I would do the fitted pillow case thing for the back with zippers about 1/2 way down so it slides on with less effort.

Check your local market for anyone offering sewing services.

She is gone now but a few years ago we have a Chinese seamstress lady at one of our local shopping centers in 3150 and it was amazing what she could do in her little island setup in the middle of a walkway.
