How to install a barn door without a bulkhead?

Hello,

I'm wondering if there are any options to install a barn door in this space, with lacks a bulkhead?

Thanks

Re: Any options to install a barn door without a bulkhead?

Hi @NamedUser,

If you want an enclosed doorway, you’ll need to install a bulkhead above the opening to properly support a barn-style door track. That’s the most effective and tidy way to achieve a clean, finished look and help separate the spaces.

The only alternative I can think of would be to leave the area above the door open. In that case, you could span a piece of structural timber, such as 140 x 35mm pine, across the opening from wall to wall. Secure it into the wall studs on each side, then mount your barn door track to that timber. It would work fine structurally, but you would still have a visible gap above the door, up to the ceiling.

If your goal is to make the space look enclosed and well finished, a bulkhead really is the neatest option. This would likely be a job for a carpenter or a handy person, but if you are keen to give it a go yourself let us know and we can provide further assistance.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
