How to install new doors?

IMG-20250712-WA0011.jpg

Hi,

I want to change my entrance door but not too sure how to change it when the hinges are embedded into the frame?

Can this be done?

Re: installing new doors

Hi @sammyla,

Can I trouble you to open your door as wide as you can and take some photos of the hinge where it connects to the door frame?

If you tap your knuckles on the door jamb, does it feel like it's timber or metal?

I suspect you might have a metal door frame with hinges that are welded to the frame rather than screwed in place.

To replace a door like this, you would need to attach the new door to the hinge while it is still in place on the jamb. It is possible, but I wouldn't advise it if you are hanging your first door ever. I've hung upwards of 100 doors in my time, and I know I'd struggle to get it right. If I were doing it, I would use the existing door as a template to mark out and then rebate the hinges, before lifting it and screwing it into place on the door.

Assuming I am correct about it being welded to the frame, I think you would be better off cutting the hinges off the frame and then using hirline hinges to hang your new door. Hirline hinges, which are often referred to as fast fix or non-rebate hinges, don't need to be rebated into the frame or door for the door to sit properly. If this is a metal frame, they are the ideal choice of hinge, because you would just need to locate and screw them in, without any rebating.

It is certainly possible, but there is a bit of complexity. I'd be happy to advise further if you have more questions.

Re: How to install new doors?

Hi @sammyla,

I just thought I'd also mention our Door Installation Service, which you might like to consider.

If you are interested, it can be arranged through your local store's Special Orders desk.

Heres the pictures of the hinges.

It looks like they are welded into the frame. When I tap on either side of the hinge then it just sounds like a hollow metal frame.

1. Can you confirm if these hinges are welded into the frame?

2. Is there any way to replace them with New hinges?

3. If they can't be replaced, any suggestions on making them look good again? What paint removers I can use etc.

ThanksIMG-20250714-WA0005.jpg

Re: How to install new doors?

Hi @sammyla,

Thank you for the photos. Unfortunately, you've taken photos from about every angle except for the one that might give us 100% confirmation that they are welded. I am fairly confident they are, but if you could upload one more photo showing this seam here from the left side of the hinge. You should be able to see some tack welds on alternating sections that would confirm.

If it is welded, you can cut the hinge off with an angle grinder with a cut off disc. You can then use the hirline hinges I mentioned above.

If you wanted to reuse them, you could apply paint stripper, then use a paint scraper to remove the paint. Any leftover paint can be removed with some wet and dry sandpaper. Just make sure to wear a mask, gloves and open the windows to allow airflow as paint stripper can have some strong fumes.

Let me know if you have any further questions.
