Re: Help with Wall Panelling please

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @ForeverYoung1. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about wall panelling.

It's old faux timber wall panelling made from Masonite or similar hardboard materials that was popular in Australian homes from the 1950s through to the 1970s. It came in large sheets and was designed to mimic vertical timber boards, a bit like VJ panelling, but it had a flatter profile and often featured a mix of board widths. What made it distinctive were the black lines printed or grooved between the faux boards, creating a shadowline effect to give the illusion of individual planks.

The surface usually had a laminated timber-look finish, often in darker tones like walnut or teak, and it was commonly used in loungerooms, hallways, and even kitchens. While it doesn’t have one universally recognised name, people often refer to it as timber-look wallboard, laminated panelling, or shadowline panelling. It was a cost-effective and easy-to-install way to get a timber aesthetic without the price tag of real wood.

My grandmother's house had it as lining boards for the lounge room and dining area. I haven't seen it offered for sale in decades, as it went somewhat out of style. If you are looking for a similar style, I'd suggest you consider re-ling the wall with VJ panels, which is much more on trend these days.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Help with Wall Panelling please

Hi Mitchell,

Thankyou for your help with my question! The panelling I showed you is installed in my permanent caravan and Annex dwelling at a caravan park that I am renovating - can you give me some suggestions on the cheapest way I could line all the walls please?

Re: Help with Wall Panelling please

Hi @ForeverYoung1

The only affordable thing that comes to mind is 2440 x 1220mm 3mm Plywood Pine Premium BC Grade. But you can always do a combination of plain plywood and EasyVJ panels for a feature wall. I suppose it all depends on the amount of space you are covering and what budget you are setting aside.

Let me call on our experienced members @twocutekelpies and @Peggers for their recommendations.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
