Hi,
I’m redoing a dinning table that was the old orange stain. I’ve sanded it back primed and painted the bottom and now I’m trying to get the right stain colour. I don’t mind what I have done with it now but I did want it to match more with the colour of the frames we have in the house.
After sanding the top I white washed it and then applied monocel clear varnish satin which is oil based. What colour is recommended to get the table top from the current colour in the first picture above, to the colour of the frames in the second picture?
And would I be able to apply this on top of the clear coat varnish?
thanks for the help.
Hello @Sophie6
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your wood stain colour.
You've done a wonderful job with your first paint revamp. The table looks fantastic.
Wood stain matching is very difficult and getting an exact match is not likely. The best you can do is to go for a close match which involves trial and error. I propose bringing one of your picture frames to the store and comparing it to the stain and varnish sample boards to see which one is the closest. I recommend speaking to the senior paint specialist for more information.
Because you've painted a sealer on the timber surface it will be necessary to sand off the sealer in order to stain the timber top properly. Staining it now as is will result in the stain clumping together and not being properly absorbed.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Hi Eric
I took your suggestion and went into Bunnings with the frame and was assisted by two staff who were very helpful. I looked at all the samples provided but wasn’t happy with any of them. The paint specialist suggested I do a Cabot’s stain and varnish water base. I was able then to choose the tint I thought would best match the frame and add it to the stain and varnish.
after choosing the stain cashew the paint specialist and I thought it would be best to start at 1/2 strength so that the stain wouldn’t end up to dark. This was a very close match but it still need more depth so we added another 1/4 which ended up being perfect.
so now after resending back to the bare timber I’ve stain it and I’m loving the final result. I’ve also got the formula for the stain so I can get the exact same next project.
thanks for all the help!
Hi @Sophie6,
I'm glad to hear the Paint Specialist at your local store was able to help you find such a close match to your frames.
You've achieved a really wonderful finish on your table that I hope you are very proud of.
Thank you for sharing.
