Paint tinting - unopened tin from a previous project

Hey guys.
I have an unopened tin of paint from previous projects. Just wondering if anyone knows if I take it in to bunnings would they tint it for me even though I didn’t buy it from a bunnings store. Obviously I’d pay for the tinting costs.

Re: paint tinting

It's fabulous to have you join the Bunnings Workshop community @dom03.

We are unable to tint your paint in-store, but we do provide the service of selling the tints for you to place in the paint yourself. If you select a colour, our helpful team will distribute the tint for that colour in a small plastic container and you can then add it to your paint at home by stirring it in. Bear in mind that each paint manufacturer has its own set of tints for their brand of paint. We carry tints to suit our brands and can't guarantee that if added to your paint they will turn out to be the selected colour. To get the correct tints you'd need to visit the place where you purchased the paint.

Please let me know if you need further assistance or have questions.

Re: paint tinting

Hello @Musharaf,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's marvellous to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your question about paint tinting.

If you purchased the paint can from the store and have the docket, the paint department will tint it for you. However, if you don't have the docket anymore, you can purchase the tint mixture from the store to tint it in the colour you want. I suggest showing the paint specialist at the store what kind of paint you have so that they will know what tint to sell you.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: paint tinting

Hi Mitchell

I just went to Bunnings to get tint for 1 L of Dulux Aqua Enamel to colour it to Flooded Gum.  This was approx. 10 mL of tint.  It was placed in a Bunnings supplied plastic "Paint Tinter" container, on which it says "may contain up to 250 mL".  I was to be charged $15 for my 10 mL of tint (i.e. $1,500 per litre), which after some earnest discussion with staff on the desk this was reduced to $7.50 (i.e. $750 per litre).

Can you tell me if I had asked for 250 mL of tint (i.e. a full container), would I have been charged $15, which would be reasonable.

However, I feel that (if I hadn't complained) being charged $15 for 10 mL of tint is far from reasonable.

Your thoughts please.

Re: paint tinting

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @John-F.

Typically, we'd supply pure tint in a 100mL or 250mL container. The 250mL container is generally used to fit the amount of tint needed for darker colours to go into 10 or 15L tins. In your case, it would appear that the tint for Flooded Gum would fit in the smaller 100mL container (though I don't have a tinting machine in front of me to check). The 100mL container costs $9, and we are happy to provide tints to fill that container entirely if you desire. Obviously, most tints for a 1L can won't be close to the 100mL mark. Some tints, like Antique White USA, would be far less than your 10mL for flooded Gum; in fact, some would only be a few drops in the bottom of that 100mL container. Tints are not sold per volume. So, whether you require the tints for a 1L, 4L, or 10L, if they fit in the 100ml container, they will all be the same price.

Of course, if you didn't get the tin tinted at the time of purchase, you can simply bring the full can back in, and we'd happily add the tints to it for free for you. Purchasing tint separately for a 1L can is not something that I would recommend unless there were some type of unusual situation that required it. Typically this service would be used by someone with several 15L containers of white paint that need to be heavily tinted.

Thanks for your feedback. I'll pass it on to our product team.

Mitchell
