Hi,
I want to add a few extra shelves inside my linen press, kitchen cupboards and my walk in wardrobe. I have a number of scraps of Custom Pine 16mm White Matt Carcass Particle Board MR as well as some pieces of Particleboard from Ikea furniture sitting around. What tools would I need to cut the particle board to size?
I'd been thinking about getting a jigsaw for the project but I'm not sure if this is the best tool for the job.
I'm not concerned if the shelves don't look perfect, given they'll be inside cupboards but do need the cuts to be fairly accurate so they fit snugly into the cupboards. I've not had a heap of experience with power tools and other than cutting shelves to size I can't imagine I will need a saw for much else as I live in an apartment.
Thanks.
Hello @alibee
I propose using a standard handsaw for your project such as the Bahco 550mm Hardpoint Hand Saw. It has excellent reviews and is affordable, plus it is easy to control and has a reasonable length. Now the cutting may take a while with a handsaw, but you will have total control, and corrections can be implemented anytime during the cut. The trick is to take your time and cut on the line. Keep the rhythm steady and don't rush the cut.
The other tools you'll need are a tape measure, ruler or a Craftright 300mm Combination Square, plus a pencil. You'll need a table to cut on and a Craftright 300mm 2 Piece Quick Action Clamp to hold the timber in place. My best advice is to double check your measurements, mark all the timber with a cutting line and cut them slowly one at a time. Because you don't forsee any other future projects coming along these basic tools will get you going.
