Country bathroom and laundry makeover

Complete combined bathroom/laundry upgrade.

Our 80s shack down south was in desperate need of attention. With double layered Lino floors, pink tiles in a shower wall lower than head height, and only enough plumbing to run the sink tap or washing machine at once, we needed functionality and updated aesthetics.

It has been a labour of love working with all the quirks of this place. Designing the layout to keep some of the natural charm and features with a new feel.

Steps

Step 1

The strip and surface preparation began.

Step 2

Walls were buffed to remove the introduced plaster texture and walls rendered to level out and bring in some more natural texture to the room.

Step 3

The old pink shower was stripped and ripped. Tiling began on walls that remained.

Step 4

The shower wall was trimmed back to a more standard size, extended wall to the roof on the right side and a small nib wall built on the left to suit the new shower screen size.

Step 5

Shower waterproofed and wall tiling completed. Got the hang of the subway tiles by this point.

Step 6

Floor tiling commenced.

Step 10

Shower screen install (definitely a two person job), tap and handles fitted, trim and shelves installed.

Re: Country bathroom/laundry makeover

Hello @rjackson

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's marvellous to have you join us and thank you for sharing your country bathroom/laundry makeover.

What a beautiful makeover, the walls transformation is what caught my eye. Removing the texture on your wall and adding new render to it has given it a much more modern finish. The subway tiles compliment the floor tiles very nicely and painting your ceiling joist in black adds a fine contrast to the white ceiling.

My favourite part of course is the vanity with the integrated washing machine beside it. I love the treatment you've done with the benchtop. Despite the height difference the benchtop keeps everything unified.

Again, thank you for sharing such a fabulous bathroom makeover.

Eric

Re: Country bathroom/laundry makeover

Thanks @Akanksha! Yes absolutely had challenges through the project. First one was the fact that it was only a 1 by 1 and replacing the shower meant borrowing the neighbours shower for the time it was out of action. Similarly the tiling was done in more stages than if we didn’t still need to use it but the tile levelling clips really helped keep it flush throughout.
Being an older, quirky house many of the walls were not straight and had to take into consideration the lip of the shower recess in the tiling. There may be some thinker spots of tile adhesive to accomodate.
The washing machine we chose (large combined washer/dryer) was bigger than expected. I was planning on a level bench but the height would have been too high for most people so ended up with the step design.
