How to fix buttons on concealed toilet cistern plate

IMG_3790.jpeg

Hi everyone,

A couple of random metal pieces popped out of the toilet buttons, which are a part of the toilet’s hidden cistern plate. Who knows where these disappeared, possibly up the vacuum cleaner.

As a result, one of the buttons is hanging loose. Thankfully, the flush still works, but the button now hangs rather than bounces back.

Is there a way to fix this? Or is this a matter of simply replacing the plate?

(I have tried to pop open the plate to check things but, unhelpfully, this is super glued on. I don’t want to crack it open until I have a better idea of the potential solution.)

Thanks!

Re: How to fix buttons on concealed toilet cistern plate

Because this is a proprietary button system, @roximn, fixing it isn’t straightforward. From what you describe, it sounds like one of the internal parts or retaining clips has broken, which is what’s causing the button to hang rather than bounce back. Unfortunately, these components aren’t typically serviceable, and there isn’t a simple DIY fix for them. In most cases, the best approach is to replace the entire plate or button assembly.

Your next step is to try to identify the manufacturer of the cistern and button plate. Sometimes there’s branding on the plate itself, inside the cistern, or on the flush mechanism. If you can’t find any, a plumber may be able to help identify it and source the correct replacement part. In some cases, you might even be able to retrofit a compatible button assembly from another brand, but that will require some exploratory work to see what fits.

Do you know if there’s any branding or model information visible on the toilet or cistern? That will make tracking down a replacement much easier.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Mitchell,

Plate says it’s a Wilco. Shame it’s not more straightforward!

It's great that you have been able to locate a brand, as without it, you could be looking at replacing the entire suite @roximn. I'd suggest either contacting the manufacturer or a plumber to find out what's involved in the repair.

If you would like to enlist the services of a plumber, you might like to use our Services Marketplace.
