How to fix toilet bowl filling slowly?

How do l fix a slowly filling toilet bowl?

The water spurting out under the grey cap seems decent compared to the size of the hole but it still takes 20+ min to fill compared to the 1 min it used to take.

Many thanks for your assistance!

Re: How to fix toilet bowl filling slowly?

Hi @snembos,

Your toilet should be filling in no more than two minutes, so something’s definitely going on with your inlet valve. The first thing to check is that the mini stop tap (the small tap on the wall feeding the cistern) is fully open. If it’s partly closed, open it right up and test again. You’re looking for a fill time of under three minutes, not the 20 minutes you’re seeing now.

I suspect that the small hole under the grey cap isn’t what actually fills the cistern. If water is only coming from there, it suggests the inlet valve itself is blocked or has failed. In that case, water can’t enter through the normal path and is instead escaping through that small vent hole.

What often happens is that the inlet valve washer deteriorates or gets blocked with debris, preventing proper flow. You can try taking the valve apart and checking that washer, but in most cases it’s simpler (and more reliable) to replace the whole inlet valve. They’re inexpensive, and something like the Fluidmaster Bottom Entry Toilet Inlet Valve is a good option and will get your toilet filling properly again.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
