How to add French cleats to a brick wall?

Hi all,

I'm thinking of making french cleats of some sort on my garage brick wall. Question though, would placing plywood first then the cleats help secure it more or would it load the bricks and cause some sort of issue?  Would the fastening the cleats on the brick wall itself be more safe?

Thanks in advance

Hi @kelso101

If the vertical sides were anchored into the wall as well, yes it would hold more weight. I suggest adding noggins between the horizontal pieces to add rigidity and provide more anchor points for the plywood.

Noted thank you @EricL

What size would you recommend for the timber frames attached to the wall?

Hi @kelso101

Since you'll be putting tools and a wall cabinet, I suggest using 70 x 35mm Framing MGP10 Untreated Pine 2.4m. If assembled into a frame it should be strong enough to carry all that weight on your wall.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.
