How to remove a tilted garage door?

How to remove a tilted garage door?

I'm going to try to bend a tilta-door (for the garage) straight again.  I am considering pulling it off first.

In order for me to do this I have one obstacle and it's this one connector that looks like a rivet.  It has a rounded head on one side and it looks like it's been riveted onto a washer on the side of the photo.  Any clues how I can get this off - or is this a one use thing that needs to be cut off?

Re: removing a tilted door ( garage door)

Hi @dominover

If you can't access the other side to see how it's fixed, then I wouldn't one cutting it off. Doing so will mean you have no way to re-fix it or any form of replacement. I would also be concerned about what load is on it once cut which could be quite dangerous.

If the door has to come off for the repair, I would get a garage door repairer to take it off so you can do the work. Based on how it comes off, you can then see how if possible to refit the door yourself.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @dominover. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about garage doors.

I agree with @Nailbag’s advice here. From the photos, that connector looks like a peened rivet of a very heavy grade. Removing it isn’t straightforward because it’s designed to hold under significant load, and if you did cut it off, the only practical replacement would be a large bolt. That could interfere with the garage door mechanism, whereas the original rivet has a low profile and won’t obstruct the door’s movement.

It would help to see a wider view of the door and the bent section so members could suggest ways to straighten it without removing this rivet. Given the system and the loads involved, I wouldn’t recommend trying to remove it yourself. This type of repair is best handled by a professional garage door technician who can safely remove, straighten, and reinstall the door without compromising its operation or safety.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

It put us all out of our misery/concerns - can you photograph the other side? Or is it hard up against the brickwork?
