Replacing a garage ceiling, especially a full-size garage, is a significant job but can be managed step by step. The first thing to do is remove the existing plasterboard, which has likely come down due to insufficient fixings and adhesive. For this stage, you’ll need basic safety equipment, including gloves, safety glasses, a dust mask or face mask, a sturdy ladder, and strong bags to collect the debris. A crowbar will be useful to carefully detach the old plasterboard from the ceiling joists.
Once the old ceiling is removed, you can select new 13mm plasterboard sheets suitable for ceilings. Installing full-sized sheets on a ceiling is physically demanding and is usually a two-person job; the use of ceiling props or jacks to hold panels in place makes the process much easier and safer. Hiring a panel lift is a great idea. While it’s possible to D.I.Y., many people find it easier and faster to have a plasterer install the new board, which typically takes less than a day for a garage ceiling.
For installation, apply a suitable plasterboard adhesive to the ceiling joists, then lift each panel into place using the props to hold it while securing it with plasterboard screws. Make sure the sheets are tightly butted together. Once all panels are in place, the joints need to be taped and covered with plaster joint compound to create a smooth, seamless surface. After the compound dries, sand it down to a flat finish before applying your chosen ceiling paint. Key tools for this project include a drill driver for screws, a utility knife for cutting plasterboard, a sanding block or pole sander, a jointing knife for the compound, and a ladder for safe access.
