A little look at the latest project that my wife and I completed. The plan was to add a multipurpose room to the end of our shed that had its own access from the backyard. I built something similar at our last house, although a bit smaller and no outside access, so was pretty familiar with steps involved. This took my wife and I a few months of mostly weekends to complete.
190 x 45 Pine for hanging beam. (Had to use treated as that's all that was available)
Harbour oak water resistant laminate flooring
Makita screw gun (with collated attachment)
Hired panel lift from Bunnings
Drywall Sander
We built the wall frames on the floor and then stood them into place. We placed moisture barrier plastic underneath the bottom plates and then screwed them to the concrete. Also screwed the frame to the shed wall girts to keep them in place. Framed up wardrobe and test fitted track and doors.
The wardrobe and entry wall were originally added because the roof line didn't clear the eave purlin brackets of the shed, but I think they added a nice touch anyway.
Once we had completed most of the framing I had my Dad come and give me a hand to install the sliding door into the shed.
We then put the ceiling joists and hanging beams into place. Once all the framing was complete we added the insulation to the walls.
Plastering was next, definitely not something that I am great at, but it turned out ok.
We hired a panel lift from Bunnings to hang the roof sheets. Added the corner trims and then used general purpose compound and plasterboard jointing tape to fill the joins. Sanded it all with a drywall sander.
Then we hung the cornice using little nails to hold it in place while the cornice cement dried.
We undercoat/sealed all the plasterboard before adding our top coats. We used Taubmans paint and were pretty happy with the result. The colours we used were Dulux Winter terrace for the walls and Dulux Lexicon quarter for the ceiling, wardrobe doors and trims.
The flooring went down next. We used water resistant floating flooring from Bunnings. We also used the floating floor underlay that has the silver moisture barrier as its going over concrete.
Once flooring was laid we added the last of the skirting and trims. We pre cut and painted the skirtings so we would only have to touch up where we nailed it on.
We cut down some melamine sheets to create a mini bar and storage in the wardrobe. Then fitted the tracks and doors to the wardrobe. The desk was added so our Daughter had somewhere to paint her nails.
Wow, what an incredible project @tobyandtamsyn! You and your wife have done an amazing job from start to finish, and the level of detail and finish is really impressive. The way you’ve framed everything, added insulation, and finished off with paint and flooring shows a real dedication to doing it properly, and it really pays off in the final result. I especially love the hanging skateboard decks on the wall, they add such a fun, personal touch and really bring the whole mancave vibe together. The wardrobe and mini bar fit-out are fantastic, and it’s clear a lot of thought went into making it both functional and stylish. Truly an awesome project all round, well done!
