How to add cabinetry for a microwave in double oven space?

So there is a space in kitchen where a double oven use to be. I have e put a single oven in and wanting to put a microwave ontop, but the opening is 100cm and I cant find anything with the right height measurements. I dont have alot of money but I know this had to be a simple fix. How can I make this happen. Im wanting to do as much of it myself as possible to cut costs

Re: kitchen oven space

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @SamanthaBell. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about installing a microwave in a cabinet.

You will first need to install some angle brackets directly above the oven to support a shelf for the microwave. Before you do anything, check the oven manufacturer’s installation instructions so you know how much clearance or ventilation space they require above the oven. Some ovens cannot be enclosed tightly, so it is important to confirm how close you can place a board on top of it. If the specifications are unclear, it is worth contacting the manufacturer to make sure you can safely build a shelf in that position.

Once you know the required gap, you can fix angle brackets to the inside of the tall cabinet. These brackets will carry the weight of the shelf. You can then make a simple timber shelf that sits neatly on top of the brackets out of whitecoat particle board. To improve the look, you can add a small vertical panel to the front edge of the shelf to hide the gap between the top of the oven and the bottom of the shelf. This gives you an open, practical space to place the microwave at the right height.

If you would like it to look more like a built-in unit, you can add a second façade panel across the front of the cabinet, cutting out an opening that matches the size of your microwave. This helps the microwave sit visually flush with the rest of the kitchen, even though it is simply resting on a shelf inside the cavity.

I've created the renderings below to help illustrate.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: kitchen oven space

So an oven cabinet isn't nessecary as this oven is just placed into the cavity.

Re: kitchen oven space

Hi @SamanthaBell,

I'm so sorry, but I don't entirely understand your comment.  Perhaps I have misunderstood your question about installing a shelf above the oven in the image.

Re: kitchen oven space

I get the impression that @SamanthaBell is confirming your solution @MitchellMc  - that a dedicated cabinet is not required to be built (she found one with the width but not the height) and inserted. The shelf idea approved.

But I could be completely wrong.

Re: kitchen oven space

If that's the case, @Noyade, we can certainly work with the current cabinet; just a slight adjustment is needed for the new shelf. 😀
