How to build kitchen island wooden extension over stone?

Hey guys. Just trying to find some ideas and hopefully dimensions that preferably won't break the bank on the best option to add some sort of wooden waterfalled edged benchtop that would become an extension over the backside of my current stone island benchtop. I've attached photos above of the idea I'm going for and my current benchtop to hopefully get some advice from anyone reasonably skilled or DIY'rs who've done similar on the how to, how hard and how much I'm potentially looking at to get this done. Appreciate anyones

Re: How to build kitchen island wooden extension over stone?

Id like to do something similar to this but am looking to go L Shaped so I can have extra space at the end of the bench.  Any suggestions as to how to make this sturdy?

Re: How to build kitchen island wooden extension over stone?

Hi @MummaJ,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

Assuming you mean L-shaped, in that it wraps around the kitchen island and extends the surface area on both the short and long sides, we'd need to consider the island's size, as there may need to be a join at the corner. If there is a joint at the corner, then this would be the most important spot for reinforcement.

Things like vertical legs and brackets, as in @EricL's example, would still be essential, but with the join at the corner, you may need to use things like benchtop joiners and plate brackets to ensure the join is sturdy. If there is any flex at the corner, this could lead to issues, so getting it right is essential.

If you could provide a few details about what you're looking to do, I would be happy to help. Some dimensions of the existing island and the desired size of the extension, a basic sketch of the plan and a photo or two would be enough for us to get started on a more thought-out plan.

Let me know what you think.

Jacob
