Best type of paint for item made of Plant Based Bio Plastic?

IMG_3014.jpeg

Happy New Year all! I have purchased these two mini pot plants as a gift and would like to paint them. They are made of Plant Based Bio Plastic and only 3 inches in height and 2 inches in width. They weren’t purchased locally and for the size not particularly cheap so would hate to use the wrong product/s and ruin them. I’d be most grateful for any advice on best approach and suitable options. Thanks so much. Pic is of current state verses what I’d like the end result to be:)

Re: Best type of paint for item made of Plant Based Bio Plastic?

Hi @Narla,

Happy New Year! With plant-based bioplastics, the tricky part is that most paints haven’t been tested on them, so there’s always a risk that some solvents in spray paints or other coatings could react with or even soften the surface. For something small and valuable like your mini pots, the safest approach is to stick with water-based craft paints, like acrylics. These are gentle on unusual plastics and come in a wide range of colours and finishes, so you can still achieve the look you want without risking damage.

If you do want to try a spray paint for a smoother finish, I’d strongly recommend testing it on a hidden or small area first to make sure it doesn’t react with the plastic. That way, you’ll know before committing to the whole piece. A light primer made for plastics can also help spray paint adhere better if you want extra durability.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
