How do I retro-fit insulation correctly before plasterboard?

How do I retro-fit insulation correctly before plasterboard?

Hi there, we have a raked ceiling in a small living room. The old plasterboard has failed due to water damage and a bad paint job a few years back. As there is no insulation between the ceiling and tiled roof, we have decided to retrofit insulation and new plasterboard over the top. We have installed the wall track and furring channel 90mm down from the existing ceiling as we wanted to retain as much of the exposed beams as possible. We have Bradford sound break insulation R2.5 which is 88mm thick. I've just realised that tucking the insulation behind the furring channel will create quite a gap between the insulation and new plasterboard. Should we run the insulation the other way between the furring channel and use some strapping to hold in place so the insulation is a tight fit between the plasterboard? What should we fix the strapping to? Thank you :smile:insulation 1.jpginsulation 2.jpg

Hi @WhiteWoolf,

Yes, what you've described is exactly what I'd suggest. Glue the flat bar to the VJ board using Liquid Nails with a 1-2mm gap which can be filled with No More Gaps. You can then paint the flat bar so it ties in well with the VJ board.

I'm no style guru, but I think timber moulding would look good for both the ridge beam and the wall connections. Quad is a simple, relatively low-profile option, but I'm not sure I'd call it modern.

Have a look through Porta Moulding's General Purpose Mouldings and their Decorative Ceiling & Wall Mouldings. There might be something in there that piques your interest and suits the style you are looking to achieve.

Let me know what you think.

Re: How do I retro-fit insulation correctly before plasterboard?

So glad to find this topic. I have been wanting to do similar for additional insulation purposes for years, but can never find any photos or “topics” on this. Looks like you guys are doing great. Is there any other ways to go about this task without using the allow tracks? Also different board material instead of plaster sheeting?
our main lounge area spans 3-4m. I noticed a pergola at a cafe that had been done really well using white faced ply or something but I cannot get a hold of the owner to quiz how it was done…

Hello @CloudyHaze

Thanks for sharing your question about insulation and cover choices for your ceiling. Aside from using furring channels the only other choice is to use timber to create the framework to hold the batts in place. There is also the choice of using plywood as a ceiling cover and of course EasyVJ ceiling panels as described earlier.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Re: How do I retro-fit insulation correctly before plasterboard?

Thanks Eric. The sample pic I have there looks like white plastic channeling… what would they be called if so, and what flat sheeting do you think they have used? The other problem is our 4m span b/w rafters which would mean further middle joins. What is the best way for a seamless look outside using again “T” double side plastic join track? Cheers

Re: How do I retro-fit insulation correctly before plasterboard?

Hi @CloudyHaze

I'll have to speak to my teammates about the flat sheeting that was used in the picture you provided. Aside from those I mentioned and plasterboard, I can't think of any other material that's plastic in nature that you can seamlessly install. In regards to the large 4m span between rafters a form of joiner will definitely need to be used; the only exception would be the Easycraft VJ panels as they join together with that plastic tounge at the edge.

Let me tag our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their opinion on the material that was used on the picture.

Re: How do I retro-fit insulation correctly before plasterboard?

Afternoon @CloudyHaze

I wonder if its something along the lines of Tunnelcore 2250 x 1220 x 8mm UV White Translucent Double Wall PP Flute Board

I know there is edging for it but couldnt find it just now. You wouldnt be able to paint it but it would provide a form of insulation I would say.

You could add a length of plaster stuck to the ceiling between the beams and then edged with timber trim (I have an old version of hardiplank between my timber rafters I think with the timber trim edging) Its a fair bit of overall weight to add to a ceiling that may not have been designe dto carry the load is my only concern for that.

Re: How do I retro-fit insulation correctly before plasterboard?

Hi @CloudyHaze,

They may have used something along the lines of what @Dave-1 has mentioned, but I can't say for sure.

With only your image to go on, to me, it looks a lot like plasterboard with either timber trims or PVC Capping around the perimeter.

How wide are the spaces between the rafters?

If they are 450mm, then you would be able to use long lengths of ceiling plasterboard, like this Gyprock CSR 4800 x 1200 x 10mm 5.76sqm Supaceil™ Plasterboard, so there are no joins. This would give you a clean, seamless look with trims only required around the perimeter.

Let me know what you think.
