How to apply a protective finish to desk?

Hi there,

I have been looking at projects where people have constructed their own desks. I have decided I would want to use the following benchtop:

Given what I have read I will be intending to sand down the panel and then put a protective finish to keep it protected for years to come.

I want to finish the benchtop for the best protection and from consulting different forums decided to use this:

I wanted to check if I need to apply to the top and bottom all at once or can I allow one side to dry before flipping to apply to the other? I am limited with tools etc as I am new to DIY/home improvement in general.

Hope that makes sense and let me know if I have missed something or you need more information.

Re: How to apply a protective finish to desk?

Hi @nerdzcanbuild,

That approach is exactly right. There is no need to try to coat both sides at the same time as that is not practical. Begin by placing your benchtop on a solid surface with the top and edges fully accessible. Lightly sand the surface to remove any oils and smooth the timber, then apply the Cabot’s clear polyurethane to the top and all the edges. Allow it to dry thoroughly, usually around 24 hours, so the finish cures properly and will not mark when you flip it over. Once it is dry, turn the panel over and coat the underside.

The product you have chosen is ideal for this type of project. For the best results, use a very fine microfiber roller or a small synthetic brush to apply the polyurethane in even, thin coats. Take your time between coats and sand lightly if needed for extra smoothness. Your desk should then be well-protected and look great for years.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
