How to build custom DJ booth?

I saw this timber bench top the other day at bunnings and thought this would be something I could use to build my custom DJ

I am still designing it before making it. What I am considering is what to rest it on so it is stable. If you see the pic I attach, it is the concept I am going for. The bottom part will be able to have storage for some of my gear and things I need space for. I may also plan to make some holes for all the chords so it looks neat and tidy. On the front piece at the bottom I plan to have my branding as a DJ on it. Then will add the lighting later. I am wondering what Bunnings may have on store that I can use as the bottom. If need be I can always paint it a different color. Thanks bunches.

Re: How to build custom DJ booth?

Hello @Innov8tive

Before I make any recommendations, I just wanted to know if you want this as a fold away transportable table or do you want it as a permanent fixed table? As soon as you let us know we'll be able to offer suggestions on how to build it.

Hello @EricL

For now it is a permanent fixed booth as it is for my home studio. I look forward to some suggestions for consideration.

I also thought that if I want to move it at some stage, then I could put wheels on it if needed. The timber top I will be buying is going to be cut as it is too large for the project and I will use the offcuts for some else. I am considering purchasing two of these to go side by side under the timber top but am unsure as of yet. As far as I know Bunnings does not cut any wood for you unless it is for builders so looking for an easy option to build it. I also do not have the equipment I would need at home to cut the wood.

Hi @Innov8tive,

If you are looking for a suitable base that you don't have to build from scratch yourself, you might like to take a look at this guide: How to build a cube storage cabinet. It looks about right for what you're after. The only thing you'd need to do is have a sheet of 3mm whitecoat MDF cut down to fit the back of it, as you can see through some of the cube openings. That would give you plenty of storage.

Re: How to build custom DJ booth?

Hi @MitchellMc

I have decided to go with this timber top. Specrite 1800 x 600 x 18mm Golden Teak Acacia Multi Use Panel - Bunnings Australia

While the design concept it important I chose this timber top because it is sturdy and suits what I need it for. I also am trying to have something that complements the wooden floors in the room I am in. I did think about going with cube storage and attaching an MDF board at the back of it. It isn't easy to find someone who will do the cut to the dimensions you need it so been trying to go for something that is already to go besides putting it all together.  As far as I know Bunnings will not do it.

My thinking was that I might as well make the whole thing wood since the timber top is wood but I realise then that I would actually need to build it. So at the moment - cube storage is looking like the best solution. I would just need to find cubing shelving that will bring the height to what I need it to be. Any tips on how to attach the cube storage to the timber top?

Re: How to build custom DJ booth?

Hi @Innov8tive,

In the guide How to build a cube storage cabinet it shows you exactly how to attach the top in Step 4.

We do not offer precision cutting, though we do cut panels. It would be best to discuss your needs with a team member in your local Bunnings store's timber department. They might be able to cut the MDF panel to the correct size for you.

Thanks a lot. I got it. I am just wondering though I did not necessarily want to put legs on mine. In saying that, can this really do without it toppling over. I will go buy what I need soon. Thanks for the assistance.

Re: How to build custom DJ booth?

The legs could be swapped for rolling castors @Innov8tive

Any table that is higher than it is wide has the ability to topple over. However, it would take significant force to do so.

Cheers. I will see how I go without it and if need be install some footing.
