hi I need to make my own floating frame for my canvas painting how can I make my own?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @mariam1. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about creating a floating frame.
To start, you'll need to measure the height, width, and depth of your canvas. From there, cut timber moulding or lengths of dressed pine to create a frame that leaves a small gap—usually around 3 to 5mm—all the way around the canvas, creating that "floating" effect. Mitre the corners at 45 degrees for a neat, professional finish, or go with square butt joints if you prefer a simpler construction.
Before assembly, you can paint or stain the timber to suit your decor. To build the frame, glue and clamp the pieces together, and use nails or corner brackets on the back to reinforce the joints. Once the frame is dry, place your canvas inside it. You can use small corner brackets or spacers screwed into the inner sides of the frame to hold the canvas in place from behind, or screw through the back of the frame directly into the stretcher bars of the canvas to secure it.
If you'd like to hang the artwork, attach a wire or D-rings on the back of the frame.
