Hi i am looking to replace 3 old lights in my living room - considering Led Track lighting as an option. Has anyone had experience with this option or have a pro / con to the idea ?
Thanks
Hi @Hunter4021,
You can certainly replace the existing wall lights with LED track lighting if you like the look, although it is worth thinking carefully about how you want the room to feel once they are in place. Track lights are designed to be directional, so each fitting throws its light forward in roughly a ninety degree cone. That makes them excellent for highlighting specific things like artwork or architectural features, since you can aim each head precisely where you want it. It also means they do not behave like your current wall lights, which spill light upwards, downwards, and out into the room, creating a much more general and even wash of illumination.
If you swap to spot-style track lights, you gain control but lose all-round glow. Even if you place three heads on the track and point them in different directions, you will naturally end up with brighter zones and darker gaps between them, because the light is being pushed in defined beams instead of radiating gently into the space. Some people like that more dramatic look, but if your aim is to light the whole living room evenly, track lighting can feel a bit harsh or patchy. Before committing, think about whether you want ambient lighting, accent lighting, or a combination. You might find that a modern wall sconce with an up and down light pattern gives you the overall softness you are used to, while still updating the style.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Mitchell,
Thank you for you thoughts / insights. Certainly gives me more considerations.

Hello @Hunter4021
I just wanted to give you a heads up that these are vintage brass light holders with scone glass fittings. I'm positive that these fittings carry a significant dollar value. Should you decide to replace them I encourage you not to bin them as enthusiast and collectors often pay for these pieces (especially the scone glass). Should you decide to keep or sell them I propose looking for a local antique restoration specialist who can restore the brass and properly clean the glass.
For a modern alternative, I propose looking at the Brilliant 29cm White Matt LED Modern Wisher Wall Light. It has an LED light source and does not visually intrude too much into the rooms setting. But if you are after something brighter, I recommend the Verve Design Opaque White Emma Wall Light.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Amateur hour - but we had the spotlight style and whether they were halogen or LED, the bulbs always died early deaths.
So I made a SpecRite box, got a 240 volt power-point installed and went with a LED light bar from Bunnings. Can't remember the exact product - but it has three lumen ranges?
Just a thought.
Hi @Hunter4021,
When I looked at those lights the first thing that came to mind was - collectors items!
I agree with @MitchellMc's comments that track lights are mainly designed for ceilings.
Cheers
Hi Alan,
Thank you for your comments.
Good Afternoon @Hunter4021
I had a couple of old wall scounces and when I renovated the loungeroom in 2014 I was going to pull them out but instead decide dto shift them to have some hanging lights instead. One thing to keepin mind is it would mean that light mainly comes from one direction so you wont have the intense light overhead but I was after ambiance.
Old sconce son the wall, with hanging tape in new place just to see if it worked.
Other side of the room
Was painting the wall and ceilings, lights were looking good.
Room back together ![]()
Still have them and may switch them out again but for now they are still there.

Thank you @Hunter4021
It really lifted it from a very tired 90's? But now it feels cluttered so my mind drifts to what i can do to change it. From types of lights to the furniture. It will probarlly stay as is until I do the kitchen/dining room ![]()
