Hi guys!
Our ceiling beams are currently stained with a very orange stain. Would I be best to paint them or re stain?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @meganc. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about ceiling beams.
That really comes down to the look you want to achieve. Both options are on the table and you can re-stain them or paint them. I notice you already have one white beam, so the first question is whether you like the effect of that one. Painting all the beams white will help them blend into the ceiling and feel less dominant, while staining keeps them as a feature and adds character to the room.
If you’re not keen on the orange tone but still like the idea of natural timber, you could strip them back and re-stain in a shade that better suits your taste, something darker and more neutral, for instance. If you’d rather they disappear into the ceiling, then painting is the way to go.
Just keep in mind that if you paint over stain, you’ll need to prep carefully to avoid bleed-through. A good oil-based primer like Dulux One Step Oil-Based Primer, Sealer & Undercoat will be essential before applying your top coats of white.
Do you think you’d prefer the beams to stand out as a feature, or disappear into the ceiling?
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi @meganc,
Let me also extend a very warm welcome to the community. I trust you found Mitch's reply helpful.
Could you please share some more photos of the beams and your house? It might help other members to see what you are working with and share their opinions. I'd also be more than happy to tag some experienced renovators in the community to see if they can share their thoughts.
All the best,
Jason
