Hi, I'm looking to convert a metal sheeting fence into a mixed material garden wall from upcycled materials such as stone, bottles, cement etc. The aim is to have a unique look that also allows places for fauna and flora to hang out. It would be about 1.5 meters tall. There is a gate that is supported by the metal posts the wall is made from... I'm hoping to keep the gate and the posts but simply remove the metal sheeting and replace it with stone etc. Is this possible or would movement from the gate flow through into the posts and ruin the stability of the wall?
many thanks.
Hi @AWolff,
This looks like a very interesting project, and I am very intrigued to see what you come up with.
You are correct that the movement of the gate and the force transferred into it would likely have an effect on your wall, so my suggestion would be to remove the metal sheeting and horizontal rail, then leave the post in place and build your mixed material wall up to it, but keep it separate.
Keeping the posts separate from the mixed material wall will mean the force is isolated and will not transfer into and through the wall.
From there, the most important thing is your base preparation. You want to ensure that the ground is stable and will not shift once the wall is in place. This video from our supplier Adbri Masonry, shows a good way to build a foundation for your mixed material wall at around the 3-minute mark - How to Build a Retaining Wall.
After that, you'll use your materials as well as mortar, to construct your wall.
Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
