Hiya. I need to replace some rivets in my 1977 Viscount caravan.
Are these pop rivets?
Which is the best riveter tool to get?
I have a Makita hammer driver drill 18V and was looking at the Makita rivet tools but rather exxy…any other power riveters I should consider?
What rivets should I be buying? Blind reverts for the exterior to minimise leaks?
Thanks for your help.

Hello @CrikeyCoral
Would it be possible for you to post a photo of the other side of the window lock. I suspect it is an aluminium pressed post and might need to be cut instead of drilled out. Once the other members see the other side of it well be able to assess if it is a giant rivet.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.
Eric
Great advice Eric! Yes I wouldn't know how to re-attach it if was a pressed post 🤔
@CrikeyCoral I don't have my Viscount on here as I haven't done anything inside yet but I do have my little 1972 York and little 1974 Franklin on here.

Just in case you have a hiccup, there is a guy on Facebook in the Viscount Owners group who 3D prints these locks, by all accounts, they work well, he's been doing it for a number of years, I think he still does them. PM me if you need his name.

Hi @EricL this is the inside…I’ve not got drill happy as yet…will await your advice!
Hi @CrikeyCoral,
You can see down the centre of the handle the other side of the rivet.

I would drill from the inside out, so you can see the handle itself, which is the thing you won't want to damage.
Just keep it steady, make sure you start slow and don't press too hard, let the drill do the work. Once the drill bit starts to bite, you won't have any issues.
Let me know how you go.

Hiya…so I should buy aluminium or stainless steel rivets? The original rivets are ali, so I would have thought to replace them with the same or blind ones as you have suggested @twocutekelpies …however someone suggested stainless steel…being an outside van…although I am unsure if they were knowledgeable about van builds!!?…
Hi @CrikeyCoral,
You should only use aluminium rivets with an aluminium frame.
Using stainless steel rivets with an aluminium frame would cause a phenomenon known as galvanic corrosion. Galvanic corrosion happens when two different metals are in contact with each other and exposed to moisture, like rain or condensation. In the case of a stainless-steel rivet being used on an aluminium caravan, the two metals would react because they are not the same type. When water gets between them, it creates a small electric current. This causes one of the metals to start corroding faster than it normally would.
I'm sure they meant well in suggesting stainless steel, but it would not be suitable.
Let me know if you have any further questions.

Sorry I wasn't able to reply while you were still at Bunnings, hopefully someone was able to help you while there. The EZI-RIV is the one you're after, the RIV-Nut is a different tool used for putting in Riv-nuts or Nutserts, this is a threaded insert that you can then put a bolt into.
Kincrome have a video on how to use their Ezi-Riv Drill attachment here that's worth checking out.
