Curtain rod won't fit inside wall bracket...

My 10mm curtain rod is supposed to fit inside these 10mm inset wall brackets.

It doesn't fit.

Can anything be done to the rod end to fix this or do I need a rod with a smaller diameter?

Thank you!

Re: Curtain rod won't fit inside wall bracket...

From the photo it looks like they are very close to fitting @Else, rather than being way off. If that’s the case, there are a couple of things you could try before replacing anything. Lightly sanding the painted end of the rod can remove the coating and a small amount of material, which may be just enough for it to slide into the bracket. Take it slowly and test the fit as you go. You could also try lightly sanding the inside of the bracket opening to open it up ever so slightly.

Another option is carefully drilling the bracket hole out a fraction larger, but this needs to be done gently and accurately so you don’t damage or distort the bracket. If you go too far, the rod may end up loose.

If none of those options work, then unfortunately, you’re looking at a compatibility issue and replacing either the brackets or the rod will be the cleanest solution. Given that 10 mm is already quite thin for a curtain rod, finding alternative brackets may be the best solution or upgrading the whole set to a more commonly available 16mm system

If it really is only just not fitting, though, sanding the rod end is definitely worth trying first.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi @Else,

I remember responding to some of your questions and yes... you have been very active so I will assume you have a selection of basic tools.

I would not attempt to enlarge the bracket hole and to chamfer the rod end try a metal file (twist as you file) and finish with emery paper.

Keep going until you have a sliding fit.

Cheers

A couple of thoughts for what they're worth.

A pipe cutter will give you a nice 'rounded' edge and microscopically reduce the diameter to help start the fit.

More aggressive - a bench grinder.

Hi @Else

Just a sideways thought, take both parts into bunnings and (usually on the tool desk) they often have calipers for checking sizes both internal and external. Get them to check both and then you will know if it is worth the effort of trying to make it fit.
