D.I.Y. floating study desk

Floating.png

We have just built our first home and we have two study nooks which need a couple of desks. We are hoping to have some floating desks built and ideally I would like to undertake this myself rather than paying someone.

Both spaces are identical, being 1350 wide, with ample space for a 600 deep table top.

Have been looking at pre fabricated table tops, possibly an OAK hardwood such as this https://www.bunnings.com.au/alpine-oak-600-x-2100mm-x-26mm-laminated-panel_p8330130, cut down to size. Off cuts could be used for some staggered floating shelves above the desks.

Interested to hear peoples thoughts and see any examples of similar projects.

Cheers

@butters,

I should have also asked whether you have seen this project on the Bunnings website? - How to make a D.I.Y. timber floating wall desk

I will also embed the video below.

Hope it helps get you started.

Re: DIY Floating study desk

Those panels are great @butters - premade, look great, few different options, easy install.

I joined two of these panels for my laundry reno https://www.workshop.com.au/t5/Bathroom-and-Laundry/My-laundry-reno/m-p/4618 then used an off cut for a shelf between the two white cabinets.

Re: DIY Floating study desk

Cheers @Jason - that link didn't work because there's a 'space' on the end of it. This works though https://www.workshop.com.au/t5/Outdoor/Floating-planter-box/m-p/2267

Re: DIY Floating study desk

So we finally took the plunge and tackled this project.

This was our first DIY project in our house, and we are happy with the result.

We picked up one of the benchtop panels from bunnings, some 30x40 timber, various screws and a few other bits and bobs to get the job done.

We added in a cable tray underneath to hide away most of the cables.

Our biggest issue we came across was drilling out the cable hole. The hole saw bits we bought we rubbish and didn't work, so we ended up just using a jigsaw and Dremel to tidy it up.

During the process we found our walls weren't square which added a few complications.

Eventually I want to add a draw underneath it, but for the time being this is what we ended up with.

Re: DIY Floating study desk

Hi @butters.

That looks fantastic and also very functional! Can I ask what cable tray you used as that management looks very slick?

Thanks for sharing and excellent job on your first D.I.Y. project.
