Furniture restoration: getting smoke smell out of wood

Hello all 😊

Just wondering if I could please get some advice on how to restore this bookshelf. I bought it from a second hand store (see pic) and it’s been sitting in my garage for about a week - now it’s started giving off a strong cigarette smoke smell, which I didn’t notice when it was in the store. Its my first project and was planning to paint it white with chalk paint. Does anyone know if that will get rid of the smell (or what I can do to get rid of the smell)? I’m not sure where to begin so any advice would be really appreciated!!

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @lysh. It's terrific that you've joined us, and many thanks for your question about furniture restoration.

Zinsser B-I-N Primer Sealer Stain Killer is specifically designed to block odours permanently. Shellac-based products like the Zinsser B-I-N are extremely effective at stopping odours from transferring through them, including those from cigarette smoke. You can then paint over this product with your choice of oil-based paint.

I look forward to following along with your project and seeing the finished results. Please let me know if you have any questions or need further assistance.

Mitchell
