Workshop community update – May 2020

We've all been spending more time at home lately, so it's no surprise community members have been sharing many fantastic projects and asking plenty of questions. Please let us know if you need help with anything around the house and garden.

We've seen a lot of interest in growing your own food, and plenty of great new raised garden beds and questions about how best to fill them. We've also had lots of discussion about decking projectsgarden makeoverscubby houses and fire pits.

Many thanks to all those who have joined in the discussions over the past month. A special thanks to our top 5 contributors who received the most likes for their posts: @redracer01@Brad@Adam_W@ProjectPete and @LePallet .

Here are some of the popular projects shared on Workshop over the past few weeks.

Garden projects

In the garden, these elevated garden beds constructed using Jarrah by @Rustikman have been extremely popular, as were these raised garden beds by @Andy_J and these raised treated timber planter boxes from @KevinMall.

We also loved @Aussie-Garden’s new hot box greenhouse – clever and practical.

Outdoor projects

Experienced contributor @Yorky88  has been impressing members with his paving projects recently, including this side access paving job. Meanwhile, newcomer @Shano1983 posted a huge backyard makeover for his first contribution to the site and @weekenddiyer shared their new festoon party lights.

We always love a good shed project, so it was terrific to see last week what @BrendanB has achieved with his Absco shed built on block pavers.

It’s fantastic when members ask for advice at the start of a project and then come back to the site after finishing it to share the end result. Given low-levele deck projects have been so popular, it was fantastic to see what @hadi had achieved with his low profile decking project  and what @BrendanB had built after being inspired by @Neo19’s work with decking over a concrete slab.

Video projects

Sharing video as well as photos can really help bring a project to life. It was wonderful to see newcomer @ninewa shared her simple coffee table project as well as an activity room makeover.

We also loved @DIY-Loomesy sharing his mud kitchen build for his daughter. We know that entertaining kids during the past couple of months has been challenging, but @LePallet shared another great idea – a kids climbing frame made from recycled materials.

Renovations and decorating

LaundryReno.jpg

@Jimi  made the most of the iso period by tackling a laundry reno. Newcomer @Gillgirl  also shared a fantastic laundry makeover at her place, while @redracer01 posted his design for a very compact laundry.

New contributor @kingj11 made a splash by sharing a fantastic wall panelling project for their daughter’s room. Meanwhile, experienced member @prettyliving posted how easy it was to add tinted window film to a bedroom window.

Woodworking

Experienced woodworker @LePallet shared a recycled Oregon timber dining table he completed recently, @Beachbox posted some pictures of a recycled timber bar top, while @Old-gal24 used beautiful red gum timber slabs to replace her kitchen and bathroom benchtops.

With so many people currently working from home, there was bound to be plenty of interest in the stylish kitchen study nook by new contributor @Nicolalane. Meanwhile, @Super_D highlighted his skills with a tambour door for his desk and @nisitha shared a study desk made with project panels.

Newcomer @Madmoggy also shared a heap of projects in his first hours on the site, including a laundry basket table, a garden step, a desk for his granddaughter, and garden windmills like this Spitfire.

@MitchellM  shared his take on @robpegley’s pallet coffee table while prettyliving shared practical and stylish recycled timber shelves.

We love it when @redracer01  shares his clever and comprehensive project plans. Recent designs have included a D.I.Y. bookcase, TV cabinet and stools that double as flower pot holders. Keep them coming, Red!

We look forward to you all joining in the discussion throughout June.

See something interesting? Give it the thumbs up!
