How to swap shower head to detachable?

The plumbers installed a standard showerhead when my bathroom was renovated in 2023, but I want the kind with a detachable showerhead to make it easier to clean the shower stall. Is that something anyone can install, or does it require a plumber?

Re: Swapping showers

Hello @Spravotchka

Generally speaking, you can install the sliding shower arm, the only challenging part will be to drill into the tiles. If you are not too keen on drilling into the tiles I suggest looking at these alternatives. The Estilo WELS 3 Star 9L/min Chrome 3 Function Hand Shower Set which has the holder integrated into the outlet itself along with a hose. The Estilo WELS 3 Star 9L/min Chrome 3 Function 1/2 Twin Rail Shower Set which has the rainhead shower head in combination with a standard shower head with a hose. Both these units do not need to be drilled into the tiles as they connect directly to the wall outlet.

But if you still prefer to drill into the tiles, I suggest using the QEP 8mm Diamond Tile Drill Bit and use the Ramset 8 x 50mm Universal Anchor - 4 Pack to anchor the shower arm to the wall.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: Swapping showers

Thank you Eric! Very helpful! I certainly would not want to drill the tiles. Sadly the one with the rainhead is not available - there is another one, but it's $325, not sure why it is so much more:

Re: Swapping showers

Hello @Spravotchka

The Flexispray WELS 3 Star 9L/min Chrome Havana Short Twin System is a branded product which has a longer warranty. I suggest calling your local store and see if they have the Estilo in stock. They will also be able to tell you if the other branches nearby have the shower head in stock.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: Swapping showers

Thank you Eric. Really dumb question: do you have to turn the water off at the mains before you take off the existing showerhead? I am guessing yes 😬

Re: Swapping showers

Hello @Spravotchka

There are no dumb questions here my friend. It's safer to ask than to guess. The good news is that there is no need to to turn your mains water off as the shower mixer holds the water at bay. There will be some residual water inside the shower head, but it will drip out once you remove it.

Here is a handy guide that will help:  How to change a shower head

Re: Swapping showers

Hi @Spravotchka,

I just thought I'd add that there is no harm in turning the water off at the mains, and it is best practice to do so. You certainly don't want to bump the mixer tap whilst attaching the shower head and end up drenched.

Re: Swapping showers

Hi Eric

It turns out that the tilers and plumber who did my bathroom have defeated me once again. They made an irregular hole in the tile around the water outlet pipe, then bunged up the hole with a large amount of silicon. The new showerhead will not fit over the silicon and lie flat against the tile. I contacted the plumber who said he was pleased to see such an excellent job, and I have to get another plumber to completely remove and replace the silicon.

Re: Swapping showers

Hi @Spravotchka,

Is the issue caused by the silicone preventing the fitting from being screwed on, or is it because the copper fitting on the wall is too long and is bottoming out in the new fitting?
