A paved entertaining area with a brick edge was laid on a mix of crusher dust and cement to prevent pavers from sinking over time.

The project

I decided we needed more room, so I created an outdoor space for the family to enjoy. There was a lot of digging, shovelling and carrying in material but it was all worth it.

I first spent a day digging out the area. I wanted to level it as much as possible, ready for a brick edge and a solid crusher-dust base.

Once the brick edge was in I spread 50mm of crusher dust and compacted it with a piece of 20mm plate welded to a handle.

It was an effort but I got the job done.

Laying pavers in a mix of crusher dust and cement should help stop any weeds coming up and also prevent any pavers sinking over time.

Once you get the first row in and a square line to work off it's easy going.

I think the most Important think about paving is to have a very well compacted base that is as level as possible. I would recommend no more than a 7mm slope per meter to help water run off the finished area.

How to lay pavers

Neatly paved paths and patios can help turn your outdoor areas into practical living spaces and be an attractive feature in themselves.
