Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Many Bunnings stores offer a timber cutting service to help you get your wood home and get started on your project.

Here are some frequently asked questions about our timber cutting service to help Bunnings Workshop members.

What type of cuts can be done at a Bunnings store?

Bunnings stores typically have two types of saws for timber cutting.

  • Panel saw – used to cut large sheet materials into smaller rectangular sections and pieces. The machine is capable of both horizontal and vertical cuts on most of our board products. Some examples of products that can be cut using a panel saw include MelaminePlywood and MDF.

Does this service have a cost?

Bunnings stores may charge a small fee for timber cutting. The price is:

  • Timber docking - First two cuts are free, and 50 cents per additional cut

  • Panels and sheeting - First cut is free and $1 per additional cut.

Is this service available at my local Bunnings?

You can check whether the timber cutting service is available at a nearby store by visiting the Bunnings website. Here’s how:

  • Mobile device - Select your nearest store and then click on your store's name on the top left of the screen. This will take you to your store's information page, including details about what services they offer

  • Desktop computer - Type the nearest store's name in the change store drop-down and then click on store details. This will take you to your store's information page, including details on what services they offer.

Can I bring my own piece of timber to be cut?

Due to the many variables associated with timber products, we can only cut products purchased from our stores.

When is the best time to visit a store for timber cutting?

Visiting at a quieter time will ensure faster service. It's best to avoid weekends and public holidays as many other D.I.Y. enthusiasts will also be looking to build their own projects.

What if I want to do the cutting at home?

Knowing what saw to use and how to use it is the key to success. Here are some useful guides to get you started:

What if I can't get my timber home?

We offer a number of options to get your products home safely. You can use our free courtesy trailer for up to two hours. If you need more time you can also hire a trailer, a ute or a van to suit your needs. We also offer a comprehensive delivery service to assist you in getting your purchases home. Most stores offer same day or next day service. Please contact your nearest store for details.

Please feel free to let me know if you have further questions about our helpful timber cutting service.

Re: Custom wood cutting - angled cuts

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @STARWARS. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about our cutting service.

Unfortunately, our machines can only cut at 90 degrees to the board edges.

It sounds like you should be able to do these cuts with a circular saw. You might like to check out our Best Advice article on What circular saw do you recommend? Also, you should find this guide on How to use power saws useful.

Please let me know if you have more questions or need further assistance.

Re: Does Bunnings cut timber to size?

Hi there, I visited your Belmont WA store yesterday, wanting to get buy and get a 900x450x12mm piece of MDF cut down to 790x415mm. I got told by the young guy at the trade counter that they "only cut down large pieces of timber to fit in to cars and not project cuts." Is this correct?  Doesn't really seem right based on what's said in this post.

Re: Does Bunnings cut timber to size?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @BucBuc. It's great to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about getting timber cut in-store.

I've contacted the Builder's Coordinator at Bunnings Belmont, and the team there can make those cuts for you. I'd suggest visiting the store at a quieter time, perhaps an evening or weekday.

Please let me know if you have further issues with having the timber cut.

Re: Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Hi, Mitchell,

Well, I've pretty much finished my cabinets for the shed. Need to make some small repairs to the shed before installing the cabinets, following the recent weather.

2 photos attached. The "splashback" won't be screwed in place until the cabinets are installed in the shed. In the photos it's just reclining against its supports. The splashback is to stop things falling off the back of the cabinet top. Also probably to hang things from.20220821_163121[1].jpg20220821_163144[1].jpg

Positives:

Beautifully cut sheets, +0.5mm/-0.0mm. My appreciation and thanks to Bunnings Cannington.

Went together almost like clockwork.

Iron on edging (front of cabinets only) went on easily and easily trimmed.

Negatives:

I had planned the shelves to be shy of the cabinet fronts by 10mm. I had not allowed for the thickness of the back panel, so had to use my bench saw to take 16mm off their depth.

I should have asked for the shelves to be made 1 to 2 mm less wide. Had to plane them down for an easy fit.

The 3/8" drill (9.525mm) I used to drill holes to fit 9.5mm wooden rod to support the shelves left the rod really loose in the holes. Added 5mm holes and used regular plastic/steel shelf supports from Bunnings.

The benchtop I had supported for a long time on trestles inside my shed has sagged a bit. Nothing that the weight of a bench drill on one end and a bench saw on the other end, and screwing the top to the cabinets won't fix.

Had ages ago bought cheap cabinet legs from China. Big mistake.

Kind regards

Re: Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Hi @Bandediron

Thank you very much for posting photos of your nicely built cabinets. I totally understand the shelves being very tight, I've made this error as well when building my own cabinets. Another method you can use to straighten your benchtop is to use ratchet tie-down straps. I suggest strapping the benchtop to the cabinetry to straighten the benchtop out. But as you mentioned once you've fixed that benchtop to the cabinetry it should straighten it out.

Please keep us updated with your progress, we look forward to seeing your cabinets installed in your shed.

Re: Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Hello,

My local bunnings has the timber cutting service and click and collect.

I need some melamine shelves. Can I combine these services and ask Bunnings to select and cut the melamine panel to size, and then pick up via click and collect? Or do I have to be instore to select my own melamine panel and take it to the cutting desk?

Thanks!
B

Re: Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Hi @BobLoblaw,

If you contact your local store's Trade Desk, I'm sure our team will try their best to accommodate your request. I wouldn't expect that to be an issue if you are only after a single cut in the panel. However, if you're after more than one cut, it becomes more complex, and it would be best to visit the store to ensure we are able to cut your panel accurately.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

Timber cutting service

I would like to know Bunnings policy regarding cutting VJ board or the lack of. I have just been told that we can't get VJ board cut due to new policies. I would love to know the reasoning behind this.

Re: Timber cutting service

Hello @BarryMull

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's a pleasure to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your question about the store cutting EasyVJ panels.

In order to for me to assist you further, can you please tell me which store you went to? Did you only require simple cuts so that the panel would fit into your vehicle or did you need complex precise cuts? Once you provide me with a store location, I can make further inquiries for you.
