Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Many Bunnings stores offer a timber cutting service to help you get your wood home and get started on your project.

Here are some frequently asked questions about our timber cutting service to help Bunnings Workshop members.

What type of cuts can be done at a Bunnings store?

Bunnings stores typically have two types of saws for timber cutting.

  • Panel saw – used to cut large sheet materials into smaller rectangular sections and pieces. The machine is capable of both horizontal and vertical cuts on most of our board products. Some examples of products that can be cut using a panel saw include MelaminePlywood and MDF.

Does this service have a cost?

Bunnings stores may charge a small fee for timber cutting. The price is:

  • Timber docking - First two cuts are free, and 50 cents per additional cut

  • Panels and sheeting - First cut is free and $1 per additional cut.

Is this service available at my local Bunnings?

You can check whether the timber cutting service is available at a nearby store by visiting the Bunnings website. Here’s how:

  • Mobile device - Select your nearest store and then click on your store's name on the top left of the screen. This will take you to your store's information page, including details about what services they offer

  • Desktop computer - Type the nearest store's name in the change store drop-down and then click on store details. This will take you to your store's information page, including details on what services they offer.

Can I bring my own piece of timber to be cut?

Due to the many variables associated with timber products, we can only cut products purchased from our stores.

When is the best time to visit a store for timber cutting?

Visiting at a quieter time will ensure faster service. It's best to avoid weekends and public holidays as many other D.I.Y. enthusiasts will also be looking to build their own projects.

What if I want to do the cutting at home?

Knowing what saw to use and how to use it is the key to success. Here are some useful guides to get you started:

What if I can't get my timber home?

We offer a number of options to get your products home safely. You can use our free courtesy trailer for up to two hours. If you need more time you can also hire a trailer, a ute or a van to suit your needs. We also offer a comprehensive delivery service to assist you in getting your purchases home. Most stores offer same day or next day service. Please contact your nearest store for details.

Please feel free to let me know if you have further questions about our helpful timber cutting service.

Re: Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Thank you so much for the reply @MitchellMc

It is sad to hear that I can;t get that done. I do not know anyone who has circular saw, I probably could do it myself but not sure if the investment into something I will use probably once. I have been looking at the selections of Kitchen and Table Tops, but couldnt find anything with the dimensions I am looking for. Is there any other product (material) type that may be get cut to dimensions at Bunnings?

Re: Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

@Former Workshop member,

You could try your local Men's Shed. They'll often take on small jobs like this for a reasonable price. Take a six-pack of craft beer with you, and I'm sure they'll be lining up to assist.

If you were able to, it might be worth a visit to your nearest Bunnings store. I'm sure the team would be more than happy to show you what options are available which can be cut in-store. Generally, it would be limited to our range of plywood

The XU1 1200W 185mm Circular Saw would be reasonably budget-friendly and do the job. It will come with a fairly coarse blade on it, so you'll need to take your time with the cut and apply masking tape to both sides of the panel to prevent excessive tear-out.

The other option is to enquire with our Special Orders. They'll be able to have a custom-sized benchtop made for you. It would be worth comparing that price to the custom options you've already investigated. A cut-to-size benchtop certainly wouldn't be thousands of dollars.

cutting plywood at new Sth kemsey store

Regarding Bunnings South Kempsey, which is currently under construction. I read somewhere that this will be a medium size Bunnings ( upgrade from tiny Bunnings in east Kempsey) How can I find out whether this store will have a vertical panel saw to cut plywood sheets etc to size, (as current east Kempsey store does not which is greatly missed) the same as Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie?

Re: cutting plywood at new Sth kemsey store

I'm looking for a table top suitable for my desk without going too crazy on price. I'm seeing the Practa worktop ( https://www.bunnings.com.au/practa-2400-x-600-x-25mm-black-laminate-worktop_p2660664 ) and think two of these stacked on top of each other would be suitable, but I need it to be no longer than 2280. I think this work top is probably chipboard underneath, do you guys cut that without too much drama?

Re: cutting plywood at new Sth kemsey store

Hi @James4

Have you thought about using 2200 x 600 x 26mm Acacia Solid Oiled Hardwood Project PanelSpecrite 2100 x 600mm 26mm Timber Panel Spotted Gum FJ Laminated or 2200 x 600 x 26mm Beech Laminated Panel? These timber panels can all be sanded down and painted, stained, and varnished to the colour that you prefer. They all fall within your required measurement of 2280mm or does it need to be exactly 2280mm?

These timber panels I've mentioned are all strong and sturdy and don't need to be doubled up to use as an office or work desk. You'll be surprised to know that the price for some of these tops are quite reasonable and one of them is even exactly the same price as the Black Laminate Top.

Unfortunately, the saw at the stores are too rough and will probably chip the laminate finish on the Practa 2400 x 600 x 25mm Black Laminate Worktop. You'll need a circular saw with a fine-tooth blade and some masking tape to minimize chipping when cutting this benchtop.

Here are some amazing work desks that our Workshop members have shared:

Re: cutting plywood at new Sth kemsey store

@EricL  @MitchellMc

FYI for all,  2200 x 600 x 26mm Acacia Solid Oiled Hardwood Project Panel from Bunnings Alexandria, NSW. They have a cut-shop and they did cut 2.2m table top into 1.2m and 1m pieces in a second. I have given up on anything deeper than 600mm as the only options above 600mm ends up with 900mm (kitchen top) which is too deep for me. I got new dual monitor holder to mitigate the issue of my preivous one occupying too much space in 600m depth desk. (anything I found 2000mm x 700 (800)mm ended being a custom job with minimum $600. 99 dollars for Hardwood was no brainer.

I got 2 x Acacia Hardwood and will do a U or L shaped PC setup with them.

Thank you guys for helping out there and in store.

Re: cutting plywood at new Sth kemsey store

Hello @Former Workshop member

Thank you for the update. I'm glad you found a suitable material for your own work table project. Have you decided what kind of stain and seal you'll be using? If you've not decided, I recommend Cabot's 1L Satin Clear Benchtop Timber Finish. I've used this on all my table projects and have found it to be very tough wearing.

It sounds like a fantastic project. I'm sure our members would love to see how you've designed your work table. Any photo updates you can provide would be much appreciated.
