How to add ceiling and insulation to garage?

IMG_6151.jpeg

I have a garage (single size) I’d like to get insulation for and then ceiling with outdoor ply or the like that I will then paint black. In summer I get flying ants that use the old borer holes leaving frass all over the car and it’s also cold in the winter in the bedroom upstairs. Garage is mostly closed but is slatted on two sides so also partly exposed.

What materials do you suggest and best way to complete the project?

Re: How to add ceiling and insulation to garage?

Hi @Dogdish28,

Thank you for your question.

I would suggest you start by insulating between the existing framing with ceiling batts of a suitable width and thickness to sit comfortably within the timbers. They can be set in place, with friction holding them initially, then Insulation Strapping can be installed using staples to hold them longer term.

Once the insulation has been installed, I would suggest installing timber battens running perpendicular to the existing timber framing at 450mm spacings. This will allow you to run your ceiling sheets over the pipes and give you a flat ceiling with only the steel beams causing deviation. Depending on the thickness of the pipes, several options for battens and pine framing are available. 70x35 and 42x35 are two good options. They should be screwed in place with a 75mm Timber Screw into each available timber.

Once the additional framing has been installed, you can use a variety of materials to line your ceiling, with 12mm marine plywood fitting your description best. This could be installed using 30mm Timber Screws.

Allow me to tag our experienced members @Nailbag and @Dave-1 to see if they have any thoughts or experience they can share.

Let me know if you have any further questions or would like clarification on any points.

Good Morning @Dogdish28

@JacobZ instructions are the way to go, I would be doing the fitout the same way

It could be an idea to sketch out your services and add measurements to the sketch of where they are in case you need to acess them later on.
