Re: timber sizes for carport

Hello @jmarch

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your carport project.

Building a carport is a great project, but it’s worth keeping in mind that it involves quite a few timber components that all work together to make the structure strong enough to handle storms and other tough weather conditions. Because of that, simply choosing timber sizes on their own isn’t usually the most helpful starting point. The best approach is to work with a drafts person or an engineer who can design a proper timber frame plan. That way, you’ll know the carport will be safe, structurally sound, and meet council requirements. Once you have a plan, it will be much easier to source the right timber and materials with confidence.

The best first step with a timber carport is to get in contact with a draft's person or engineer. They will be familiar with the local council rules and regulations and can draw up a proper plan that meets those requirements. This will make the permit application process much smoother, since councils generally require an engineering plan before they will approve the project. Once you have that plan, you’ll know exactly what timber sizes and materials are needed, which makes it much easier to purchase everything with confidence.
