How to build a goat shelter?

Hi, now I'm planning to build a 3m×3m shelter for my goats, in Fairlie.

I and my two goats are moving to there end of this month, and I only got 2days before moving to work so I need everything to be perfectly prepared.

Now I'm checking timbers online, and I can't find 3m siding boards or panels like stuff. Is there anything available for it?

Also the rafter that I want, 150×50 Red H4 Treated Retaining Timber 3.6m seems out of stock. Is there any chance I can get them?

I need them to be delivered to Fairlie and considering its cost, I can't buy some timber over some shops so...

Thank you for reading this.

Re: siding boards of the goat shelter

Hi @goatist,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.

These are some fantastic plans and a first for me, having never helped anyone with a goat shed.

Unfortunately, none of the stores in the vicinity of Fairlie have stock of your timber at 3.6 metres. The 150 x 50mm Rad H4 Treated Retaining Timber is available at 4.8 metres at the Timaru store if you could make them work for you. Otherwise, I would suggest contacting the Trade Desk at Timaru to see if they can order them in for you.

For your cladding, you could use these Pineclad 180 x 18mm H3.1 Pre Primed Finger Jointed Pine Bevel Back Weatherboards, which come at 6.3 metres. You can then cut them to size for use on each different length of wall with minimal wastage.

The best advice I can offer is to contact the Trade Desk team at Timaru to discuss your options. They will be able to get in touch with our local suppliers and will be able to assist with sourcing products and arranging delivery for you.

Let me know if you need any further assistance.

Re: siding boards of the goat shelter

Thank you for replying.

You're right, 4.8m and 6m works. Thank you.

But the pineclad is bit too classy for my project. I wonder why there aren't many people build a goat shed and need just rough panels.

I would definitely talk to the team if there could be possibly another option.

Thank you for your great advice.

Re: siding boards of the goat shelter

Hi @goatist,

If you're looking for something just to create a blockade that is not too fancy, you could use this 200 x 25mm Radiata Merch Treated Pine H4 Green Sawn, which the team at Timaru has confirmed comes in roughly 6 metre lengths.

They are H4 treated, so they will stand up to the weather, and they are that little bit thicker than the Pineclad, so they should stand up to some fairly strong treatment from your goats.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Jacob
