Bamboo Shishi-odoshi (Deer chaser)

The soothing sound of falling water accompanied by a distinct "clack" or "donk" sound.

This was a 2012 project so some of the stuff looks a bit primitive including the demo video clip.

For tips on threading the PVC tubing through the spout post see my Water barrel with bamboo spout project.

Re: Bamboo Shishi Odoshi (Deer Chaser)

I've always wanted to make one of these @AlanM52, but never got around to doing it. You've done a fantastic job!

Question, do the moving parts just slide against each other, and does the weight of the water overcome the resistance/friction? Any need to grease the joints?

Many thanks for sharing.

Re: Bamboo Shishi Odoshi (Deer Chaser)

@MitchellMc thanks for the nice comments.

The spout simply rocks (slides) on the bamboo cross support.

Spout balance.jpg

Cut the spout so the node is about middle (Blue arrow).

Bore the spout pivot holes just below the node.

The black lines indicate the amount of water (and weight) in the spout just before it pivots down.

If the centre of balance is such that the spout fills with water, pivots down and stays there we need to add weight to the other end - the bottom of the spout.

Wrap a pebble in chicken wire and stick it up the bottom end.

Check the balance again and if needed (likey) change to a larger or smaller pebble.

In my case I had to cut a foam disc and shove it to the bottom of the spout to reduce water weight - not sure why.

Re: Bamboo Shishi Odoshi (Deer Chaser)

I watched the Heretic last night.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heretic_(film)

There's a scene where Mr Reed has a Dear Chaser set up - catching water from a leaking roof.

I sat up and told my wife - "I know what that is!" - "I saw it on the Bunnings Workshop!"

😁

Apparently it also appears in the move Kill Bill?
