Best process for painting my timber kitchen cabinets

I'm a bit confused with the options for painting TIMBER kitchen cabinets. There are some great examples on here but some seem to use primer, some don't, some top coat, some don't so I thought I'd put down what I was thinking to get some clarification as to whether I'm doing the right thing!

I was inspired by Nicole Herricks transformation https://www.workshop.bunnings.com.au/t5/Featured-Projects/Kitchen-cabinet-makeover-using-paint-spray....

The Dulux Reno Range seems a good option (as its specifically designed for cabinets) but what is the real difference between that and using a Dulux Aquanamel like I'd use on my trim? I also understand the Dulux Reno Range has to be used within a certain number of days once the additive is added so I wonder if this is a limitation if I have a hiccup or want to spread the job out (I may want to do the trim and island cupboards first but there may be a delay in doing the cupboard doors.

Some people seem to use the Dulux Reno Range primer but some, like Nicole, use the Zinsser primer (which certainly gives a better base coverage for the colour). What is better?

Also, some use the Dulux Reno Range clear coar as a final coat but some don't bother. Is the final coat needed if you've done say 2 coats of Zinsser primer and two coats of colour?

Sometime I think I watch TOO many videos haha.

Some suggestions/guidance would be appreciated to put me on the right track.

Thank you.Kitchen.jpg

Re: Best process for painting my timber kitchen cabinets

Hi @DIYHaveaCrack,

The key difference between Dulux Aquanamel and the Dulux Renovation Range comes down to durability and system design. Aquanamel is a one-part enamel that is reasonably tough, similar to what you’d use on trim. It’s forgiving and easier to work with, but it doesn’t offer the same high-impact durability that kitchen cabinetry often needs. Over time, if there’s a knock or scratch, you may need to touch it up.

The Dulux Renovation Range, on the other hand, is a full system designed specifically for high-use surfaces like cabinets. It’s intended to be used with the Renovation Primer, so for best results you should stick to the products in that system rather than substituting another primer like Zinsser. Using the clear coat in this system is optional: it adds an extra protective layer so that impacts or scratches are less likely to penetrate through to the timber, but it isn’t strictly required if you’re happy with just two coats of colour.

If you choose Aquanamel, you can pair it with Zinsser primer or Dulux Max Adhesion Primer, which Dulux recommends. This combination works fine and gives a solid base. But if you choose the Renovation Range, the safest approach is to use the primer, colour, and optionally the clear coat from the same system. Sticking to one system will make your process simpler and give the most consistent, long-lasting finish.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
