We transformed our dark, dated kitchen into a calm and organic space. The original brown cabinetry and harsh contrast were replaced with soft shaker-style fronts, all painted in a beautiful earthy green. We built out the island to add character and improve function, then added warm brass lighting and woven leather stools for texture and warmth. Subtle details like new hardware and natural accents help bring everything together. The result is a fresh, timeless kitchen that feels inviting and blends modern simplicity with a relaxed, organic vibe.

We unassembled the existing cabinet sides and backings and removed the sides of the stove benches and the kick boards of all the cupboards. Electrician was brought in to disconnect stove, island power and pendant lights.
Tiles were removed from the floor and replaced with hybrid flooring. We took some measurements and mocked up and built the frame for the island side pillars.
Cut and installed the sheets of MDF for the new sides next to the stove and installed using wood screws. Cut and installed the sides, backing and leg surrounds for the island.
Cut and installed the new kick boards using nail gun, compressor and liquid nails. New side panels on the upper wall cabinets were cut and installed
Cut out and installed new power point on the side of the island. Electrician was brought back in to reinstall stove and reconnect power back to the kitchen island.
Cut a heap of 4mm MDF strips at 60mm, then ran those same MDF pieces through the table saw again at a 25 degree angle to create the desired shaker profile. We then added the shaker look detail to the island sides and back using nail gun and liquid nails. Wood filler was used to cover joins and nail holes, before the entire island was sanded fully.
Primed entire island and new door fronts.
We converted two of the cabinets on the far side of the kitchen to sets of drawers to utilize the space better. This was done using ikea drawers
Kitchen Island, new door fronts, oven side panels and kickboards all painted in Porter's Paint Oakmoss. Island and kickboards were painted with a roller. All door fronts and side panels were spray painted. Two coats of paint were applied to all doors, panels and island, sanding in-between.
Soft close hinges were installed and all doors mounted with new knobs and handles. Hand towel rail was installed on the side of the island.
Pantry was repainted to match the new kitchen colour scheme.
Sit back and enjoy the new Kitchen.

Hello @Acewoodhome
Your kitchen transformation is exceptionally well-executed, achieving a perfect balance between modern refinement and natural warmth. The earthy green cabinetry introduces a sense of calm, while the shaker-style design adds timeless character. Extending the island enhances both functionality and aesthetic appeal, and the pairing of brass lighting with woven leather stools adds rich texture and visual interest. The thoughtful attention to detail, from hardware to natural accents has created a cohesive and welcoming environment that is both elegant and practical. It’s a truly inspiring and beautifully curated space.
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful kitchen revamp.
Eric
@EricL Wow! Thank you so much for your kind words
Hi Acewoodhome,
I love your kitchen makeover and we are currently rebuilding our kitchen from the floorboards up. We’re trying to customise our island and really like how you’ve added the ends on to your existing island. I need to order our bench top asap and am hoping you wouldn’t mind sharing how wide you made the frames for the island side pillars and if possible how wide the sides are once you added the shaker style panelling?
‘Your kitchen and pantry have been so cleverly designed. Thank you very much for sharing your progress and end result. I’ve looked online and found similar designs but they’re just pictures so finding your plan and step by step info has been very helpful.
Thank you so much,
Rosemary
Hello @rsmryhll
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us.
Let me tag @Acewoodhome to make them aware of your kind words and question about the island. It's great to hear that you've been inspired to build something similar. Please make sure to post an update once you've started so that our members can see your progress while you build your own island. If the island benchtop is of a standard depth it would probably be around 900mm deep and 3000mm long.
On the condition that it is built at standard height the side panel would probably be 860mm tall and 860mm wide. When you add the 40mm bench top it would end up being 900mm tall. But let's wait for Acewoodhome to confirm.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.
Eric
Hi @rsmryhll
Thank you so much for your kind words, I’m so glad you found my kitchen makeover inspiring!
For the island ends, we made the frames for the side pillars 85mm wide, that is the measurement with the mdf panels on both sides, the depth that they come out from the main island is 200mm. The whole side panel once completed is 800mm wide.
Our island measures 2560mm long and is 890mm high including the stone bench top.
If you’re ordering your benchtop soon, I recommend allowing a little extra width in your measurements just in case your panel thickness differs from mine.
I’m so excited to see how your kitchen turns out, it sounds like it’s going to be beautiful!
Absolutely love the transformation here. Feeling inspired by your incredible effort 👌🏾
