90’s bedroom furniture update

My 1990’s orangey pine bedroom suite was in perfect condition but very dated. A few coats of paint and new knobs and it’s as good as new again.

Materials

I used Zinsser BIN as an undercoat as you don’t need to sand the varnish off first so it’s a brilliant product, then two coats of paint. I used Taubmans Slender Pine in a satin finish.

Tools

Just regular paintbrushes

Steps

Step 1

1. Wipe down surfaces thoroughly

2. apply a coat of BIN primer/sealer/undercoat

3. apply 2 coats of normal water based paint in your choice of colour. Allow to dry thoroughly between coats.

4. add new knobs

Re: 90’s bedroom furniture update

Hi @tryhard1961,

A very warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community — it’s such a pleasure to have you join us!

Your bedroom furniture makeover looks absolutely fantastic. You’ve done an amazing job breathing new life into those pieces, and the transformation is truly impressive.

I’m sure it was a relief not having to sand everything back, thanks to the Zinsser B-I-N. It’s such a time-saver and clearly worked a treat in helping you achieve that smooth, professional finish.

The combination of the fresh satin paint and the updated hardware has made a world of difference. Your furniture now has a modern, refreshed look that really elevates the space — such a huge step up from the old varnish finish.

Thank you so much for sharing your project with us. We’re really looking forward to seeing more of your DIY adventures!

Jacob
