A Jurassic entryway to kids bedroom

Our Son and his love for Dinosaurs evolved into a project of Jurassic proportions with this Roar-some new entry way to his bedroom.
Inspired by his favorite movie we decided to add this neat new addition to his room.

Steps

Step 1

The first step was to asses the spot we wanted to open in the wall. After consultation we were advised it was fine to remove the tongue and groove boards for the opening as it was not a load bearing wall.

(Always seek advice from an engineer or qualified builder before removing walls!)

We reinforced the opening with framing timber.

Next we made a plan with the dimensions to fit our new opening. IMG_0363.jpeg

Step 2

Using 12mm MDF board we created each section of the pillars.
Leaving one side open to be able to attach them to each other and then the floor.

Step 3

Once the pillars were complete we moved on to the arch way.
Plotting the measurements before transferring them to the MDF sheet for cutting with a Jigsaw.

Step 4

Making the doors was a little more involved as we had to replicate the shape of the originals. This was done with a combination of sizes all which are available in store.IMG_0400.jpegIMG_0401 2.jpegIMG_0403 2.jpegIMG_0419.jpeg
The doors were glued and screwed together before being hung with Gate hinges.
Next we stained the doors to give them that more authentic feel using Feast Watson Black Japan Varnish, adding heavy coats to some sections for that weathered look.

Step 5

Now the lettering had to be made out of the remaining off cuts of the MDF board we used earlier.
These will be glued to our archway and some base layers of paint applied to them after the next step.

Step 6

Now to add texture and make the whole structure look as one we used a combination of Smooth coat filler and Wood Glue mixed with Acrylic paint to add some color to the mix.
(and yes that is a Dinosaur through that gate!)

Step 7

The doors were reattached and the lettering glued in place.
And multiple more coats of texture and paint added.
Waiting for things to dry became the hardest part at this point!

Step 8

The final touches being added including model train moss and grass being glued to sections to add some more immersion into the Dino world.IMG_1096.jpeg

Step 9

Complete!

Re: A Jurassic Entryway

Hello @OG_Bee

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us.

Thank you so much for sharing your Jurassic Park Entryway project. This is truly a project that is above and beyond! I saw how you did the letters and I would have probably given up at that point. The detail is amazing and clearly this gate was a labour of love.

Again, thank you so much for sharing such a wonderful project.

Eric

Good Evening @OG_Bee

hahahah LOVE IT!!! That is some effort you have gone to and its paid off BIG time!

How long did it take to do? And how much do you think you soent approximatly?

I have come close several times to building a full fledged "Stargate" dial up disk for my driveway over the years... Yet to be done lol Admiring your work, best part was that "grass" from a model railway  nailed it!

Re: A Jurassic Entryway

Firstly i must say a big thanks to my better half who gives me the creative freedom to just go for it! So with that said i highly recommend you draw some plans and just stick them on the fridge for your Stargate! Ive found if you ask the big questions while there in the Bunning's plant section there is less resistance!

The project was actually quite cheap as its mainly MDF, The Wood filler i used for the shaping can be spread along way so that was quite economical, i guess to reduce the cost, the Pine DAR for the doorways could have been made out of plywood. But i would estimate under $200 with the paint maybe coming in a little more.

I have another very large display i have built for my robot collection so Ive have had way to much experience making small landscapes! Unsure if the group here would like to see as it ventures into modeling i guess more then DIY.

Looking forward to that Stargate! And many thanks for your kind words!
