Finding My Feet

D.I.Y. bedhead using recycled timber

My wife has wanted a bed head for a while now and after a trip to the tip, I found a bunch of long wooden beams full of nails that I ended up taking home. I used the grinder to get rid of the nail and voila… Free wood! That was my motivation for getting this project going!

Materials

Wood beams

screws

Gyprock (should’ve used ply wood)

shiplap

paint

wood trim

Silicone for edging

Tools

Drill

screw driver

hammer

mitre saw

stud finder

Steps

Step 1

Mark out the size and shape with tape and start attaching wooden frame on the studs.

Step 2

Start building the frame - the challenge was making the holes to act as bedside tables. Finding this wood at the tip was awesome and saved a good chunk of money.

Step 3

Getting the holes framed was a challenge - lots of measuring and re measuring especially to get both sides to be exactly the same.

Step 4

We wrote messages and drew pictures to any future renovators after we are long gone.

Step 5

I covered the whole thing with gyprock, a step I probably didn’t need to do but I’ve never done this before. Luckily gyprock sheets aren’t that expensive but still added more work than needed.

Step 6

Added shiplap from Bunnings and made sure the fit was good - again, measuring about 5 times to cut once

Step 7

Painting is “fun” with a 3 year old wanting to be involved

Step 8

After painting, I didn’t like the edging, wasn’t sure how to make it pop and look good so I used some curved edging wood trim which worked well! I used clear silicone to glue it into place, if it oozed out it wouldn’t be visible and it could be easily cut off.

Step 9

Done! The project took about 10 hours. (3 days)  I’m a Total amateur but Pinterest, YouTube and Bunnings staff at Victoria Point (QLD) helped me a lot! All up with paint and mistakes the project came to just over $1000.  If I hadn’t made mistakes and got the gyprock which I didn’t need i could’ve got it under $800.

Re: D.I.Y. bedhead using recycled timber

Hello @arczajkowski

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your bed head project.

The bedhead looks great! It's good to know that you've managed to recycle some timber in the creation of your project. The shiplap adds a nice touch to the project and getting the family involved in the assembly is just priceless.

Again, thank you for sharing this wonderful project.

Eric
