What brand of paint and primer did you use?

Re: Upcycled buffet sideboard

HI @AlexB  I use British Paints Paint and Prime. It's got great coverage as a primer and at the same time as providing a smooth quality finish. I usually do 3coats or 2 coats and a touch up) mostly because I leave awful brush marks! It's water based so easy clean up and comes in the flat, satin or gloss for the finish you want.  Cheers, Dana

Re: Upcycled buffet sideboard

That looks so much lighter & nicer, would fit perfectly in any home  I wish I had that foresight to see how good something can look just with some good ideas.

I'm trying to get some cupboards for a big mud room/laundry & it has a concrete floor but is also the entry to the house so has to be good to look at & I do like the vertical panels accentuated with the paint colour you used. I saw shiplap being used to cover a big cupboard & that looked great.

Hello @twodogz

Thanks for joining the discussion and sharing your proposed idea of updating your mudroom.

One of the best tips I can offer when looking at upcycling furniture is to make sure that it is made of solid timber. Don't get anything that is laminated with wood. You can easily tell by looking at the edge of the furniture, and you will see the telltale sign of the artificial wood tearing away.

Solid timber furniture is often heavy and very solidly built. Pull the drawers out and look inside, open the doors to make sure that the rest of the cabinet is in good condition. The fewer repairs you have to make the better. When looking at a possible candidate, always imagine what it would look like when placed in your mudroom. Would it be possible for you to post a photo of your mudroom? I'm sure our members would be more than happy to offer you ideas on how to layout the room.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric

Hi. Just wondering what you used for the top? Is it a stain then gloss? Looks great.

Re: Upcycled buffet sideboard

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Ellcher. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for jumping into the discussion.

I'll mention @DanaR, so they are alerted to your question. Hopefully, they can let us know what coating was used for the top. I'd also be interested in knowing what the finish is as it's exceptionally lovely.

Do you have a sideboard you'd like to upcycle? I'm sure everyone would love to see some before and after photos.

Please let us know if you need any assistance with your project or have questions.

Mitchell

Re: Upcycled buffet sideboard

HI @Ellcher! You are correct! I used a stain and then 3 coats of spray gloss. The first couple of times I used the spray gloss, I didn't let it dry in between coats long enough. I only waited an hour instead of at least 6 hours and then let it cure for 24hours+. Believe me it makes a huge difference! Hope this helps.
