I got fed up with seeing the grass and weeds around the base of our citrus trees so I raided the free timber bin at Bunnings for the packers out of the fence palings packs, cut up a hardwood stake that wasn't being used and made my own tree surrounds.
Free timber from Bunnings timber yard bin
Hardwood garden stake
Climacoat screws
Garden soil
Mulch
Fertilizer
Mitre Saw
Paint brush/roller
Drill
Saw horses
I cut each packer in half as they were roughly 1m long each and cut up an garden stake that we weren't using into 100mm long pieces (same height as palings). I had left over timber protector from my previous garden project so I painted all the pieces with that to help prevent rot etc. I screwed the pieces together with 40mm climacoat screws that I had left over from another project.
While the timber protector was drying, I weeded and fed the citrus trees and the following day, I put it all together - dug the surround in a little, then added extra garden soil and some mulch (both from Bunnings). I was careful to keep too much soil and mulch from around the base of the trees.
I hope this helps someone looking for a cheap and easy solution to a similar problem 😊
