What to do with narrow side of the house?

I am looking for low maintenance ideas for the side of my house. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: What to do with narrow side of the house?

Hi @Melanne,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is wonderful to have you with us.

You might like to start by having a look at Ideas to revamp your side yard and Top 10 most popular side yard projects for some ideas and inspiration.

If you just want to add greenery, hardy architectural plants such as lomandra, liriope, or mondo grass, provide structure without becoming overgrown or demanding regular care. Planted in simple lines and finished with mulch, they'll stay neat, tolerate tough conditions, and require minimal watering once established.

If you wanted to, you could also remove the existing path and start fresh. Something like @diy_hausdesigns' Side yard transformation, with a stepped paver path and some well-defined garden beds, would look wonderful. You could reuse the pavers to reduce waste and costs.

The existing pavers can be lifted and the base reestablished to ensure a stable surface. Once the base is prepared, the layout can be clearly defined using garden edging to separate the pathway from planted areas and decorative stone zones. The pavers would then be reinstalled to form a clean, functional path, with decorative stones backfilled around them to reduce maintenance and improve drainage. Check out How To Lay A Stepping Stone Pathway for some further guidance.

Planting can then be completed within the designated garden areas, followed by mulching to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and give the space a finished, cohesive look. Adding weed mat will also help to reduce the need for future maintenance.

As part of the upgrade, you might also consider installing a basic irrigation system to keep everything watered with ease. Check out Installing Irrigation Sprayers And Drippers for some guidance.

Allow me to tag @Dave-1, @twocutekelpies and @mich1972 to see if they have any ideas they can add.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob
